There you have it, dear Northerners. 20 bizarre Canadian laws that are almost too bizarre to believe. We may or may not have broken some of these rules, but it is neither here nor there. We are innocent until proven guilty, aren`t we?! One of the strangest illegal things in Canada is paying for purchases with a lot of coins. Under Canadian law, you can only use a maximum of 25 loonies (the Canadian dollar coin) and only 5 coins at 25 cents. Don`t worry, the Secret Service won`t track you down if you pay $30 in loonie coins, but some sellers might use this law against you if they hate coins for some reason! So it`s best to spend them on gas station chocolates instead. The United States has its own immigration laws and to enter the country from Canada, you will need to apply for a visa or ESTA, as your Canadian papers do not cover you. To find out what type of visa you need to enter the United States, click here. However, as the Huffington Post reveals, many of these laws will change as Canadian law is updated in the coming months. So check before they`re gone, just to be sure.
British Colombians are known to be a relaxed population, but you`d better monitor your Ps and Qs, or you could go to jail. Read more about these weird and crazy laws and more in Weird British Columbia Laws: * From 1947 to 1986, it was illegal to sell ovens on a Wednesday in Vancouver * Kelowna once allowed nude swimming in public waters, but only between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. * In Port Coquitlam, it`s illegal, Owning more than four pet rats or allowing your livestock to roam the streets * One of Esquimalt`s earliest laws prohibited throwing snowballs within city limits * From 1916 to 1977, you couldn`t buy alcohol on election day in British Columbia * An ordinance from Oak Bay requires residents to keep their noisy parrots silent * And much more. oh, Canada. We love you, but we don`t always agree. Despite our occasional disagreements, we still respect you. Even if we don`t understand why, how, or when you decide to do some of the things you do, we wouldn`t have done it any other way. Thanks to your creativity (?), we can create such lists with ease. In honour of Canada`s upcoming birthday, here are some “snapshots” of a time when public servants may have taken themselves too seriously? We`re going to give you 20 weird Canadian laws that we can`t believe ever existed.
It sounds super random, but it`s in their statutes! This is the most sensible law on this list, as it may not seem strange to those who are afraid of snakes. In Fredericton, New Brunswick, it is forbidden to transport a snake or other reptile in public. For example, you can`t carry a snake across the street and wrap it around your neck. But you can take your reptiles outside if you have a cage or container that completely confines the animal. Oddly enough, many of these laws are still in place today, so you could have technical problems. However, some hilarious laws have been removed because they are incredibly stupid. *Note: Most of these laws no longer exist or are (obviously) no longer enforced. It has long been said that a former governor of British Columbia said it was illegal to kill a sasquatch. While there does not appear to be such an official statement, B.C. laws state that wildlife is owned by the government and cannot be hunted without a special permit. For your own protection, it`s probably best to let Bigfoot go when it crosses your path.
19. It`s a bear, it`s a moose. it`s a Sasquatch! Maybe one of Canada`s strangest laws says that if you see the big guy in all his hair in British Columbia, don`t shoot! Just run and hide. If you kill the gentle giant, you could be arrested. In Halifax, Nova Scotia, taxi drivers are not allowed to wear t-shirts. Number 24 of the Halifax Regional Municipal Statutes on taxis and limousines states that drivers must be dressed in a clean and orderly manner at all times; They must wear shoes and socks, wear their clothes and are absolutely not allowed to wear a T-shirt. Poor taxi drivers probably struggle in summer! Laws can serve many very important purposes, such as: Forcing your noisy neighbors to close after 11pm or keeping slow drivers out of the fast lane.
