As one of our legal advisors who worked at a private law firm once said, “Interning with the city teaches you how to be a lawyer, not just a good law student.” In other words, we are committed to ensuring that our law students not only have a successful artistic semester, but are also well prepared for their professional practice as lawyers. In addition to the unique opportunity to work in a bilingual municipal administration, our art students are entrusted with important responsibilities and valuable practical experience. This includes fully promoting their own cases in Small Claims Court, conducting prosecutions under the Provincial Offences Act, and participating in hearings before various tribunals and arbitral tribunals. On the lawyers` side, students participate in the drafting of municipal by-laws and other legislative matters involving the municipal council and various committees. Our articling students gain hands-on experience in independently handling a wide range of legal issues while benefiting from a collegial team atmosphere in which they are constantly accompanied by their articling directors and lawyers from the department. As valued members of our legal team, articling students are critical to achieving our goal of providing excellent and timely legal services. LSRS will help you find a lawyer or paralegal who will provide legal services in the legal field that meet your needs. The lawyers or paralegals who participate in the service will offer you up to half an hour of free consultation. This advice can be given by telephone or in person (the choice is up to the legal representative). The City of Ottawa Legal Services Articling Program offers articling students the opportunity to work in a wide range of practice areas and teaches students the professional responsibilities of a lawyer. The program also responds to the Department`s overall objective of providing clients with high-quality and timely legal services.

Currently, there is an additional two articling students in Legal Services. During each articling period, a student is assigned files that expose him or her to each of the areas of law practiced in the department. Articling students are usually fully responsible for litigation files under the jurisdiction of the Small Claims Court. Students are responsible for other assigned files and can expect to participate in the preparation and participation in various tribunals, such as labour relations arbitration, Ontario Municipal Board, Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, etc.
