Ontario Regulation 413/05 reaffirmed Ontario`s preference to limit tractor wheelbases to the national standard of 6.20 metres. The wheelbase dimension is measured from the centre of the steered axle to the centre of the drive axle group (usually the centre of the driving axles). Conveyors specializing in transporting oversized or overweight indivisible loads often use extra-long tractors to accommodate additional axles, heavier suspension and/or fifth wheel sliding couplings for proper weight distribution. These requirements are generally accepted by our department, and these freight forwarders are regularly authorized to operate this fleet of special vehicles for routine “authorized” transport of lighter O/O loads. However, this property is not intended to inadvertently permit the use of tractors that are too long with large berths or living quarters commonly used in other jurisdictions. Ontario Regulation 366/09 (Screens and Handheld Devices) under the Highway Traffic Act contains a number of exceptions to the prohibitions in the Screens and Handheld Devices Act. In particular, certified Superload escorts are exempt and may use radios during their activities. There may be cases where, due to road parameters, the associated requirements may change. If necessary, the region(s) may request accompanying persons if none are normally required, or additional accompanying persons to those who already need accompanying persons. The certifying staff has been instructed to check the dimensions of the wheelbase of the tractor and, if they suspect that a haulier is unnecessarily using an excessively long tractor, they must request clarification and/or supporting documentation setting out the requirements applicable to the extra-long tractor.
Reasons such as on-board generators are often unjustified due to their compact size and the abundant availability of portable rental units suitable for most applications. Carriers should expect to provide a photo of the suit as justification. A single driving licence may be issued for movements on motorways subject to reduced loading restrictions. However, the weight and load engineer must approve these steps. Annual approvals with special weight conditions for certain axle load configurations include an additional condition relating to the reduction of loading times. The fee for the single driver`s licence depends on the size and weight of your vehicle and the load combination, as well as the duration of your journey. Hi, I`m wondering about flag requirements if a cargo has a rear overhang. If we need a permit as soon as a cargo comes out of the trailer, or if there is a limit like starting 2 feet from the trailer, we need a flag. Can you please help me? Note: Applications for licences with a rear overhang over 4.65 m must apply for only one driver`s licence and are subject to the requirements for private escort vehicles.
A second private escort warning vehicle is required to track the cargo approved by this permit on two-lane roads. A project permit is granted to allow contractors to move loads, objects and similar structures along the same route for up to 6 months, depending on the duration of the contract. A private escort warning vehicle is required to accompany the movement of the authorized cargo. The private escort warning vehicle must precede loading on two-lane roads or follow loading on multi-lane roads. A freight forwarder would need an overload permit if carrying cargo of exceptional size and/or weight. The dimensions considered overloads are: Obtaining an overload permit requires more steps and may take longer than other overload approvals (at least 5 business days and, in some cases, up to 6 months). These applications are reviewed by the engineers in charge of the Ministry of Transport and other ministries. Centre distance is another consideration that must be taken into account when maintaining the federal weight. To protect the bridges, it is necessary to calculate the number and distance of the axles that support the load of the vehicle. For example, a bridge weight formula is also applied to commercial vehicles to determine their compliance with federal weight limits. The federal bridge formula applies when the gross weight on two or more consecutive axles exceeds the limits of the formula, except that two consecutive sets of tandem axles can each support a gross load of 34,000 pounds if the total distance between the first and last axles is 36 feet or more.
ii. If the GVWR is not verified, the sum of the maximum load rates of designated Divisible Permit tires may be issued by the state based on the state`s historical grandfathering or congressional approval for a state-specific commodity or road of greater size or weight. “Overloads” are not considered routine applications and require more time for testing and treatment. “Overload” requests require additional documentation and are thoroughly reviewed by the Department of Transportation`s Weight and Load Engineer, as well as various senior ministry officials, depending on the circumstances. Under no circumstances are permits valid on designated motorways with reduced loads that are signposted in accordance with § 122 paragraph 5 HTA. There are very few reduced-load roads under the jurisdiction of the province. Schedules listing low-load roads are approved and published by the Road Operations and Maintenance Division. All licensed escorts must complete the Ontario Traffic Manual 7 before they can participate in the MTO Approved Certified Overload Escort Program.
The purpose of the Act is to provide a means by which oversized or overweight vehicles and loads can be transported on provincial roads. Specific vehicle configuration approvals are granted for vehicles that deviate from the requirements of the ETS and regulations.
